Abstract

This work was done evaluate the biofilm forming capacity of S. epidermidis isolates associated with device­related infections in pediatrics ICU patients and correlation between the phenotypic character on CRA and the genotypic character by PCR detection of the ica genes This study was conducted over a period of 20 months from October 1st 2004 to May 31st 2005 on patients admitted to different ICUs of Mansoura University Children Hospital (MUCH) This study revealed the following results:Nosocomial S. epidermidis was the second most common organism isolated from these infection sites after Klebsiella spp. and accounting for 18%.Nosocomial S. epidermidis infections accounted for 18.27 % of BSIs, 44.83% of vascular catheter related infections. Phenotypically (by CRA) 56% of nosocomial S. epidermidis strains were slime positive and 44% were slime negative. Genotypically (by PCR) 66% of nosocomial S. epidermidis strains were ica positive and 33% were ica negative. In 90% of S. epidermidis population, the CRA test confirmed the correlation between the presence of ica genes and slime production.The overall antibiotic resistance was more frequent among CRA positive and ica positive nosocomial S. epidermidis strains reaching statistical significance for some antibiotics.
