Abstract This study was conducted on tvi/enty premedicated adult patients without cardiovascular diseases and with good liver and kidney functions to detect the effect of calcium admini¬stration on the duration or the degree of d-tubocurarine induced hypotension. The patients were assigned to two groups 10 patients each. In all patients anaesthesia was induced with 5 mg.kg ~ thiopentone sodium followed by suxa- -1 methonium 1 mg.kg. Anaesthesia was maintained with 60?o N20 in oxygen . After intubation and recovery from suxameth-onium apnea, 0.5 mg.kg d-tubocurarine was injected I. V. One group of the patients were given calcium gluconate 3 g. I.V. over 3 minutes before induction of anaesthesia. Blood samples were withdrawn from all patients (5 ml each) before induction and before dtc administration for determin¬ation of both total and ionized calcium concentrations in serum. The blood pressure and pulse rate were measured pre~ operatively before induction, after intubation by 3 minutes and every one minute after d-tubocurarine for the first 5 minutes, and then every 5 minutes for 20 minutes. |
