Abstract Twinty-one normotensive patients of both sex were the subject of this study. Their mean age was 30 years (range from 20 - 40 years). They were classified into three equal groups. The first group was kept as control. The second and third groups were premedicated by verapami I 10 minutes before induction of anaesthesia in a dose of 0.075 mg. kg” ’ and 0.15 mg.kg”””’ respectively, anaesthesia was induced -1 -1 by thiopentone (5 mg.kg ), suxametheniurn (1 mg.kg ) and maintained by halothane, N20 - 02 - relaxant. The heart rate, blood pressure and E.C.G. were recorded before induction, following endotracheaI intubation and then 10 minutes later. It was observed that verapami I in a dose of 0.15 mg.kg””^ was protective against heart rate, blood pressure and E.C.G. changes during laryngoscopy and intubation, smaller doses 0.075 mg.kg was not pro¬tective against changes in heart rate and blood pressure. It is suggestive thaf verapami I in adequate dose can be used to attenuate the cardiovascular changes following endotracheaI intuba-t ion. |
