Abstract

Type B hepatitis is a problem with regard to blood ransfusion. The routine test used for detection of HBsAg is not reliable because some donors who are negative for HBsAg are still infectious. There have been case repotts of persons in whom acute hepatitis B deve- loped after receiving transfusion of blood that was HBsAg and anti-HBs negative but anti-HBc positive. Detection of anti-HBC is considered the most reliable test because it is usually present early in the disease and persists for a loncj period or even for life. So, the aim of this work is’ to detect hepatitis B carriers among blood donors and recepients, not detected by the routine HBsAg only, using anti-HBc test. our work was conducted in blood donors and recep- ients of Mansoura University Hospital. They comprise 106 volunteer blood donors (66 males & 40 females), their age ranged from 18-48 years, all of them were randomly selected from Blood Bank and act as control group for recepients. one hundred and four blood recepients (patients) 1(89 males and 15 females) their ages ranged from 2-73 years were randomly selected from Mansoura University Hospital of different wards.
