Abstract

(1) Plasma lipid profile in Egyptian hypertensives. This study included 65 patients with essential hypertension, 13 renal hypertensive patients, 21 diabetic hypertensive patients and 19 Egyptian normal controls. The following laboratory investigations were done for all subjects: plasma total cholesterol, total triglyceride, HDL-C, LDL-C, phospholipids, FFA, immunoturbidimetric assay of apo A-l and apo B and lipoprotein electrophoresis pattern on cellulose acetate support medium. Total cholesterol and triglycerides were increased significantly in essential hypertensives, renal hypertensives and diabetic hypertensives compared with those of the control group. HDL-C, alpha lipoprotein and apo A-l were lower in essential hypertensive patients, diabetic hypertensive patients, hypertensives with renal failure compared with control values. The lowest levels were found in renal hypertensive patients. LDL-C and apo B were higher in essential hypertensive patients, diabetic hypertensive patients and hypertensives with renal failurejlie change was worst in diabetic hypertensive patients. TC/HDL-C ratio was significantly higher in essential hypertensives, diabetic hypertensives and renal hypertensive patients. Of all the studied hypertensive groups the worst lipid profile in comparison to control values was found in diabetic hypertensive patients. Obese hypertensives had significantly higher triglycerides, phospholipids, pre-beta lipoprotein and apo B in comparison to non-obese essential hypertensive patients. HDL-C, alpha lipoprotein and apo A-I were lower in obese hypertensive patients than in non-obese hypertensive patients. Male essential hypertensive patients had significantly higher apo B and significantly lower HDL-C in comparison to female essential.
