Abstract

This work was conducted in healthy population (volunteer blood donors) in Mansoura University blood bank in order to determine the prevalence and role of hepatitis-D and hepatitis-NANB (HCV) among them. Furthermore, to find whether surrogate tests (anti-HBc and ALT) are useful means of detecting NANB carriers. Full medical history for each individual was taken. Each of them was tested for hepatitis-B surface antigen, rapid plasma reagin (Syphilis), HIV-1/2 antibody. Screening of 823 individuals for HBsAg was done. The HBsAg positive members were undergone anti-HDV screening. HDV positive samples were also tested for HBeAg and anti-HBe using the commercially Abbott ELISA kits. i - From the total samples, 139 samples were screened for anti-HBc and 137 samples for HCV and ALT. This study revealed Delta positive rate of 1.6% in relation to all individuals (13 out of 823) and 36% in relation to HBsAg positive carriers (13 out of 36). These findings indicate that delta hepatitis is endemic in our locality and this related to endemicity of HB infection which recorded 4.4% (36 out of 823). The rate among non.
