Abstract

Oral contraceptives are currently the most widely prescribed medication in use. It is estimated that more than three quarters of Egyptian women prac¬tising contraception use combined oral pills. It is natural, therefore , that such widely used drugs sho¬uld recieve a thorough scrutiny for possible side effects on any of the body systems. In this thesis we reviewed and studied the cut¬aneous manifestations of oral contraceptive pills. Our study matched 100 women using DCs against a comparable group of 100 women using non-hormonal methods for birth control. The minimum duration of contraceptive use was b months. The majority of our cases recieved low dose combination pills containing ethinyl estradiol ^ 50 Ug 4- gestagen. This contrasts with most of the review studies which used high dose pills containing ethinyl estradiol or mestranol in doses ^ 50 Ug + gestagen . Cutaneous manifestations were demonstrated in 64 % of the cases using oral pills compared to 22 %
