Abstract

Epistaxis represents a great challenge to otolaryngologist. This work aims at showing the various etiological factors of epistaxis, the ideal method for investigating a case of epistaxis and the different procedurs used for control and mane,gement of epistaxis. many causes are responsible for epistaxis, most of them are local while others are general causes. Stoppage of nasal bleeding is the first aim of treat- ment till investigations are beeing taken to reach its cause and then treat it. Many methods are in use for the sake of stoppage of bleeding such as anterior nasal packing with or without posterior nasal’packing, cauterization of the bleeding vessels, ligation of the external carotid or maxillary artery and the use of haemostatic drugs Various drugs are used in treatment of,epistaxis. They can he 11sed systemically such as tranexamic acid (Cyklokapron); Epsilon amino caproic acid (E.A.C.A).. para-aminomenthyl benzoic acid (P.A.M.B.A.); Ethamsylate (Dicynone or Eselinate)~ Carbazochrome salicylate, (Da-flon, Vitamin K and Ascorbic acid. Some haemostatic drugs can be used topic-all~ h as Microfibrillar coll- agen (Avitene or MCH; Vrombin Absorbable Gelatin Sponge (Gelfoam or U.S.P) an,d Oxidized Cellulose
