Abstract
In this study the incidence of otogenic intracranial complications at Mansoura University Hospital was calculated during the last five years (1975 - 1979) in relation to the number of chronic suppurative otitis media cases attending the E.N.T. outpatient clinic during this period. The percentage of the complications to the number of patients with chronic auppurative otitis media admitted to the hospital and those operated upon was also calculated. The incidence of each type of complications alone in correspondence to the preceeding data was also calculated. The relation of the disease to age was observed and the ratio of males to females was recorded. The total death rate and also the death rate of different types of complications were calculated. The relation of death to age was observed and ratio of males to females of the lost cases was recorded. The results were compared with that at different locali¬ties during the preantibiotic and postantibiotic era. We concluded that there is sufficient evidences that the incidence of otogenic intracranial complications has undergone a very considerable reduction since the introduction of sulfonamides and antibiotics.
