Abstract

The nose is one of the most richly supplied organs in the body in both the nervous and vascular elements. The autonomic nerve supply to the nasal mucosa is carried via two routes: The greater superficial petrosal nerve, carrying the parasympathetic nerve supply to the nose and the deep petrosal nerve, carrying the sympathetic supply. Both constitute the Vidian nerve after they unit at the foramen lacerum. The vidian nerve travels through the vidian canal to exit in the pterygopalatine fossa joining the pterygopalatine ganglian, via which, ” it gives the autonomic nerve supply to the nasal mucosa. The rich vascualr supply of the nose has a peculaire arrangement specified for the different functions of the nose with its modulation exerted by the autonomic nervous control. The fine balance between both divisions of the autonomic nervous system and the intimate relation between the vascular and nervous elements of the nasal mucosa is the cornerstone of understanding the pathology, clinical picture and management of vasomotor rhinitis and the related other conditions.
