Abstract

The evaluation of scrotal swellings is greatly enhanced by ultrasonography which contributed much to the diagnostic confidance. Scrotal ultrasonography is a simple, noninvasive, nonionizing, rapid and reliable imaging modality of the scrotal contents (Hamm et aI., 1986). This study included 100 cases with 139 scrotal swellings and 162 lesions. Their ages ranged from 39 days to 75 years. They presented by a variety of different scrotal swellings which were diagnosed by ultrasonography and color Doppler examination. Varicocele was the most common scrotal lesion which was seen by ultrasonography as tubular echo-free spaces lying superior and posterior to the testis. These spaces enlarged by Valsalva and on the upright position, they ranged from 3-7 mm in diameter. The color Doppler have been used to detect small subclinical varicocele and classified it into three grades according to the wareform patterns recorded during quiet respiration and during Valsalva manoeuvre. The varicocele have been graded as following; grade (I), no venous reflux with its waveform patterns (0-2); grade (II), intermittent reflux with its waveform patterns (3) and grade (III), continuous reflux with its waveform patterns (4-5).
