Abstract

Fifteen normal male and female adult guinea pigs and Ifteen male and female newly born guinea pigs were used in Ihis investigtaion to study the histological features and lome histochemical reactions of the liver. Paraffin sections •ere prepared and stained with Haematoxylin and Eosin stain, fcal lory’s, Gordon and Sweet’s reticulin, PAS and Best’s prmine technique. Fresh frozen sections were treated listoc.hernical ly for identification of succinic dehydrogenase lenzyme activity. The liver of newborn weighs 4-5g, comprising one-Itwentieth of the body weight. While the liver of adult weighs |40-43g comprising one-twelve of the body weight,In the newborn guinea pigs the liver appeared markedly (immature. No lobular pattern was detected due to absence of interrelationship between the central veins .and the portal tracts. The hepatocytes lacked organization into regular [plates. Sinusoids were narrow and less developed. Hepatocytes ’appeared smaller in size about (28 urn) in diameter than those of the adult liver. However, in the adult liver, the lobular pattern became clearly defined and could be identified by the
