Abstract

This work was conducted on fifty two (52) patients with linical evidence of portal hypertension in all the evolutionary stages If hepatosplenic bilharziasis and/or cirrhosis compared with 7 tealthy control. Our study confirm the highly significant increase in glucagon, ile acids, prostaglandin E2 and moderate significant increase in nkephalin serum levels as a humoral factors constant with portal ypertension. Methionine enkephalin is the only one that showed highly ignificant increase in ascitic patients which explained either by iigher portal hypertension in those patients and less degradation by rohably an advanced hepatic derangement, as a result or could enkephalin rise share the pathogenesis of ascites in the syndrome of portal hypertension as a cause, or both. Methionine enkephalin beside glucagon selectively were ignificantly increased in cases with recent history of bleeding which nay he due to intimate association of enkephalin rise to increased atecholamines with its famous old behaviour (stormy portal . ypertension), and the haemodynamic effect of glucagon that ’ontributes to increase azygos blood flow and creation of more sizy nd risky varices, which trigger a question: to what extent it is logic.
