Abstract

BNP is one of the natriuretic peptide family. This peptide was originally isolated in porcine brain (Sudoh et aI., 1988). It was later found in cardiac tissue and in plasma (Saito et aI., 1989). It may be co secreted with atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) from atrial granules (Hasegawa et aI., 1991), but the primary source ofBNP seems to be by synthesis from cardiac ventricular tissue (Mukoyama et aI., 1991). This work aimed at studying plasma levels of BNP in patients having systemic arterial hypertension as one of the methods for evaluation of these patients. We also tried to correlate between these findings and echocardiographic left ventricular mass and functions and to test the validity of plasma BNP level as a marker for L VH and dysfunction. The present study comprised 50 patients having systemic arterial hypertension and 10 control healthy subjects. All patients and controls were subjected to clinical examination, ECG tracing, plain X-ray chest radiogram and echocardiography. Blood sample was withdrawn for evaluation of plasma BNP level.
