Abstract The aim of this study is to evaluate the febrile neutropenic patients as regard casue of fever, identification of the causative or predominant pathogens whether bacterial, viral, fungal or combined infection and finally to assess the success rate of the asigned antibiotic regimen. Twenty febrile neutropenic patients with oral temperature 38.5 C or higher and absolute neutrophil count less than 500/cmm were the material of this study. They were 15 males and 5 females with ages ranges between 13-35 years (average 22 years). Thirteen of them were acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, six cases were acute myeloblastic leukaemia and one case was non-Hodgekin’s lymphoma. All of them were under chemotherapy for their underlying neoplasm. On analysis of the clinical data, fever was present in all cases, cough, expectoration and.chest infection were present in 8 cases (40%). Pharyngitis in 6 cases (30%), cellulitis in 2 cases (10%), wound infection in one case (5%), Herpetic skin eruption around the mouth in 4 cases (20%), purpuric eruption & bleeding tendenceis in 6 cases (30%). Jaundice in 4 cases (20%) and hepatosplenomegally in 12 cases (60%). |
