Abstract

Thirty five males patients with hepatosplenic bilha¬rziasis from 21oto 55 years old, comprising 25 patients with documented esophageal varices and 10 patients without demon¬strable esophageal varices together with 10 normal males from the same age group were the material of this study. Total serum proteins, serum albumin, serum bilirubin, serum transaminases and serum creatinine were measured. Esophagogastroscopy and barium swallow were done to demonst¬rate and to grade the esophageal varices. Liver biopsy was performed using Tru-Cut needle to identify the hepatic histopathology. Esophageal manometry was done using a direct intraesophageal microtransducers. The results were analysed, tabulated and submited to the student T test of significance. Analysis of the manometric data revealed that, LES is the part of the esophagus more affected in putients with hepatosplenomegaly whether they have pure bilharzial or mixed hepatic pathology due to the presence of varices. Also there was a highly significant decrease in percentage of full relaxation of LES in cirrhotic patients with or without demonstrable esophageal varices.
