Abstract
Because of the variability of pathogenesis of anemia of chronic renal failure before as well as after hemodilaysis, and the accepted usage of iron as a supplement, we attempted in our study to evaluate the importance of blood indices and serum ferritin estimation in such condition. serum ferritin is generally considered to be the best indirect index of the body iron stores. Thus,its estimation is necessary to decide the presence of iron deficiency. This study was conducted to evaluate iron status in uremic patient with or without hemodialysis, and study its relationship with hematological and biochemical parameters of such patients. This work included 52 uremic patients beside six normal controls. The selected patients were not suffering from any associated condition that would affect the body iron status. The subjects were classified into 3 groups: GPI : control group, GPII :Uremic patients before hemodia~ysis and GPIII : Uremic patients under hemodialysis. The thrid group was futher classified according to the duration of hemodialysis into: GPllla (HD < one month), GPlllb (HD for 1-6 months) and GPlllc (HD > six months).
