Abstract This study aimed to clarify the functional state of thyroid gland in H.S.S. whether it is euthyroid, hypothyroid or hyperthyroid and to determine the site of defect if any whether at thyroid, pituitary or hypothalamic level, since previous study on such cases were controversial. (2) The material of the present study comprised 13 normal subjects (control group) and 40 cases with bilharzial hepatosplenomegaly (20 cases ascetic and 20 non ascetic). (3) The studied cases were subjected to thorough clinical examination with special stress on history of bilharzial infestation , state of the liver and spleen, presence or absence of ascites • symptoms suggestive of liver cell failure , state of the thyroid gland as regards its size beside symptoms and signs suggestive of hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism with stress upon past history of drug intake like estrogens androgens and thyroid preparations. |
