Abstract

The IOL haptics have multiple fixation sites which can be determined by ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM). The aim of this work is to detect the haptic position and to determine its relationship to adjacent intraocular structures in different types of intraocular lens implantation. In this study, eighty five eyes with pseudophakia, from outpatient clinics of ophthalmology centre, Mansoura University, were subjected to full ophthalmological examination including; Slit-lamp biomicroscopy, visual acuity testing, applanation tonometry and ultrasound biomicroscopic examination of all quadrants. The patients were classified into 3 groups, 1 st group were subjected to cataract extraction with posterior chamber IOL implantation, 2nd group were subjected to anterior chamber IOL implantation while the third aphakic group were subjected to secondary implantation of PC IOL using scleral fixation. The results of ultrasound biomicroscopic examination in the study revealed in group I that the 2 haptics were located within the capsular bag in 16 eyes, in the ciliary sulcus in 19 eyes and the superior haptic in ciliary sulcus, the inferior haptic within the capsular bag in 19 eyes : other haptics had multiple fixation sites which had been determined by ultrasound biomicroscopy, in group II 10 haptics were located at root of.
