Abstract fae concept of iajectable contraception has des¬ervedly wide appeal. Tae introduction ot them as long¬acting pharmacologic agents tor fertility control appears to fill a gap within the existing technology to suit a certain segment in various communities. The most widely used agents are depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA¬Depo-provera) and norethisterone oenanthate (NET-EN ¬Norigest) • The progestogen component in injectable contrac¬eptives is synthesized either trom derivatives of prog¬esterone or as esters of the 19 - nor testoeterone group. DMPA is a microcrystalline s_spension, which can be adm¬inistered OJl a 3 or 6-montb.ly basis at a do•se ot 150 and 300 mg respectively, while NET - EN is prescribed in a solvent mixture of benzyl benzoate and castor oil at a proportion ot 4 : 6 and is active only for a maximal period of 12 weeks (at a dose of 200 mg).
