Abstract

Diabetes mellitus with pregnancy is recognised as an important cause of maternal morbidity, congenital malformation, intrauterine fetal death and neonatal morbidity & mortality. An increased incidence of these complications has been associated with duration of diabetes, the presence of vascular lesions and the degree of control of diabetic state during pregnancy (Kitzmiller et al., 1978). Congenital anomalies, prematurity and respiratory distress syndrome are common causes of perinatal mortality in diabetics. With improvement outcome as decreased levels. good control of diabetes, there is marked both in maternal morbidity and in perinatal indicated by decreased perinatal mortality, birth weight & higher neonatal blood glucose The present study comprised 80 pregnant diabetic women managed at Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Mansoura University Hospital from June 1991 to June 1992. They were classified, according to Priscilla White Classification. into class A (6 patients), class B (66 patients) and class C (8 patients).
