Abstract

Certain patterns of blood gas and pH changes have been observed in association with varying hemodynamic states that are accompanied by heart failure during infancy and childhood. Several characteristic changes in serum electrolytes have also been observed in such cases. Moreover, hypoglycemia have been observed in newborn with CHF. Our study was therafore intended to ascertain the relative frequenc of varios acid-base dis turbances, and biochemical alterations in infants and children with CHF, and their implication for treatment. The material of the presesnt work, comprised 31cases with CHF, 11infants and 20children, together with 10normal controls. The presece of cariac failure was established on clinical grounds. Prior to treatment, arterial blood sample were obtained for the study of blood gas and acid-base profile, and also other samples for analysis of serum electrolyte and blood glocose. These studies were repeated after control of CHF had been achieved. For control purposes, similar studies were carried out in the control group.
