Abstract

Diarrhoea is among the most oommon symptom in paediatrios espeoially in under-developed oountries. It is still the most common oause of morbidity and mortality in childhood (Aubrey and Jeff y, 1980). , Infectious diarrhoea remains a major cause of illn, ess in young children everywhere (Richard and Vaughan,l98;3). In our country, acute diarrhoea still represents a major problem in paediatric age groups and infantile diarrhoea is among the leading o auaas of the high in¬fant mortality in Egypt. Within the last few years, it has been noticed that what was known as summer dia- rrhoea is now extencling allover the years round. The present work was carried out aiming to study the role played by faecal bacterial flora in infants and children wi th acute diarrhoea. This work was done on 189 infants and children complaining of acute dia¬rrhoea, 123 male and 66 female aging from neonatal per¬iod up to 15 years of age. They were taken from paedia¬tric reception, outpatient clinic and inpatient depart¬ment of Mansoura University Hospital. Twenty normal controls, 12 male and 8 female of comparable age were chosen from the same area.
