Abstract

The present study was intended to assess hemostatic parameters and anticoagulants including P.C and A.T.III in infants and children with C.C.H.D including those with thrombotic complications. It comprised 32 infants and children with C.C.H.D aged from 4 months to 10 years chosen from Cardiology Outpatient Clinic, Pediatric Department, Mansoura University Hospital. The diagnosis of the cardiac defects was based on clinical examination and echocardiography. These patients were divided into 2 groups; the first 24 patients without thrombotic complications and the second: 8 patients with thrombotic complication (6 patients with cerebral thrombosis, I patient with renal vein thrombosis, and I patient with inferior vena cava thrombosis). The diagnosis of thrombotic complications was established clinically, radiologically and by Doppler flow study. In addition to thorough history-taking, general, neurological and cardiac examination, the following investigations were carried out for all patients: C.B.C, P.C.V, Pa02, P.A, A.P.T.T, fibrinogen, F.D.P, P.C and A.T.III. In the present study, patients with C.C.H.D showed marked degree of polycythemia, being more evident in those with thrombotic complications. Furthermore, the polycythemia was positively correlated with the severity of arterial hypoxia confirming the role of erythropiotin mediated erythropoiesis. Those patients showed a considerable degree
