Abstract

The aim of the present work is to investigate the role of of calcium ions and sodium ions on motility of different segments of gastro-intestinal tract by using calcium chan-nel blocker (verapamil) and sodium channel blocker (pro¬caine). Also, to investigate the relative contribution of intracellular stores of calcium and extracellular fluid as sources of the contractile dependent calcium in smooth mus-cles. Experiments were done on isolated different segments of gastro-intestinal tract of rabbits using physiological solut-ions with varied composition; Tyrode’s solution, cal¬cium free Tyrode’s solution, sodium free Tyrode’s solution and sodium free calcium free Tyrode’s solution. These sol¬utions were used to find out the role of each of sodium ions and calcium ions in the motility of the different seg¬ments of gastro-intestinal tract smooth muscles. The spontaneous rhythmic contractions were recorded by using two channels Oscillograph. Verapamil was found to cause a highly significant in-hibitory effect on contractions of the gastro-intestinal tract smooth muscles. This inhibitory effect of verapamil was noted to be a concentration dependent. Also, verapamil inhibits contractions in calcium free medium. This denotes.
