Abstract The present work aims to study the effect of omeprazole ( a proton pump inhibitor) , which is used in the treatment of peptic ulcer , on the basal and stimulated exocrine pancreatic secretion especially bicarbonate solution and try to clarify the possible role of it in pancreas as a site of proton pumps. Experimental groups were as follow: 1- Group I (10 dogs ) : to study the effect of omeprazole on basal pancreatic secretion. 2- Group II (10 dogs) : to study the effect of secretin hormone on basal pancreatic secretion 3- Group III (10 dogs ): to study the effect of secretin before and after omeprazole. 4- Group IV (10 dogs) : to study the effect of insulin before and after omeprazole . The exocrine pancreatic secretion were taken as basal , after one , two and three hours and analysed for volume, pH , Na+ , K+ , CL- , HC03-, using electrolyte and automatic gas analyser and at the same time the serum samples were taken and analysed for pH , Na+, K+ ,CL- , HCOr , using also electrolyte and automatic gas analysers . Results showed that there is no effect of omeprazole on basal exocrine pancreatic secretion but it inhibits secretin and insulin |
