Abstract

MR examinations of the spine were performed on 24 patients, all of them were suffering from manifestations of disc herniations and were presented to us by either myelography, CT or both whereas all patients had performed plain radiography of the spine. Both sagittal <Tl and T2) and axial images were done using different protocols of examinations according to the region of the spine examined. The results of MR examinations were compared to those of myelography and CT in the different regions of the spine. The diagnostic advantages and disadvantages of MRI in comparison with myelography and CT were assessed as possible as we can. We concluded that MRI is an accurate completely non invasive modality for evaluation of disc herniations. It can be performed on out-patient basis. It has the cabability of multiplanar imaging, the axial as in CT and the sagittal as in myelography without interference with the patient position which is considered of special importance in examination of patients with herniated discs. Not only MRI is an effective tool in diagnosis of disc herniation with an excellent intrinsic tissue contrast, but also it is very safe with unknown significant side effects. Both Tl and T2 Wls are necessary for evaluation of disc herniations and also the sagittal and axial views. The normal and herniated discs.
