Abstract The study was carried out on 19,858 primary school children, in one scholastic year in Mansoura. This stu¬dy showed that there were 53 cardiac cases among these children resembling 2.7 per 1000 ; 29 (1.5 per 1000) were cases of rheumatic heart, while 24 (1.2 per 1000) were suffering from congenital heart. Regarding age and sex distribution of rheumatic heart cases it was found that females were more affected than males, 19 cases were female while only 10 were males. The majority of rheumatic cases (51.72%) were in the age between 10 - 12 years. Females showed a peak incidence in the age 11 - 12 year while male cases were more in the age 9- 10 year. The total number of congenital heart cases was 24 (1.2 per 1000), 14 were females (0.71 per 1000) and 10 males (0.50 per 1000). The highest age incidence of congenital heart was 6 - 7 year in both males and females. The majority of rheumatic heart cases (65.5%), and (70.8%) of congenital heart cases, were kids of workers, while the minority (10.4%) of rheumatic cases. |
