Abstract

This study comprises two main parts: First, assessment of the problem of brucellosis in the Asir Region of the Saudi Arabia through a descrip-tive cross-sectional study of the population there. This was carried out by bacteriological and serological examination of 1,331 individuals chosen randomly from different areas of the Asir Region. These individuals included normal healthy persons as well as patients with pyrexia of undetermined origin (P.u.a.) or other symptoms. Second, assessment of the volume of the animal reservoir of infection among cows, goats, sheep, buffaloes and camels both in the Asir Region and in Egypt through examination of milk samples collected randomly from different rural areas. The prevalence of brucellosis among patients presenting with pyrexia of undetermined origin was 58.7% as compared to 0.8% among healthy indi¬viduals. Patients with symptoms other than pyrexia had a prevalence of 15%. The overall prevalence of brucellOsis in the Asir Region of Saudi Arabia was 27.4%. Brucellosis was more prevalent in children lesS than 10 years of age.
