Abstract Color coding duplex Doppler sonography is an effective, simple and non invasive method for evaluating the presence and nature of portal veln thrombosis. In this thesis, we performed a prospective study to asess patency of portal vein by color coding duplex Doppler sonography. .• Portal vein thrombosis can be diagnosed non invasively by using either real-time or duplex Doppler sonography (Alpren et al., 1987). Gray-scale sonography does not provide information about blood flow dynamics ln the portal vein. Instead, the diagnosis of portal velD thrombosis is based on demonstration of echogenic thrombus and other morphological features (Van Gensbek et al., 1985). Unfortunately, if the thrombus is hypoechoic or if the lumen appears relatively echogenic despite vascular patency, portal vein thrombosis may be missed or falsely diagnosed. The use of Doppler sonography with its ability to detect and characterize blood flow, can improve diagnostic accuracy (Nelson et al., 1987). However, duplex Doppler measure5 flow information from a single selected |
