Abstract This study includes 30 cases (21 males and 9 females) with white atter diseases of the brain. Their ages ranged from I to 70 years old. hey were subjected to complete neurological examination, CT and MRI ludics. The first group is nultiple sclerosis including 20 cases, 15 males ,ltd 5 females with their age ranging from 10 to 50 years. The disease is ommon in the 3rd and 4th decades and shows male predominance since 5 (75%) of cases are male. The patients with MS were classified linically into two groups, the first one including 15 patients with clinically i efinite MS and the second including 5 patients with clinically probable S. MRI was positive in all patients with definite MS and positive in only 5 of 8 cases with clinically probable MS. The typical site involved in all (15) cases with clinically definite MS . is the periventricular regions (15 around the body of the lateral ventricle), 6 around the third ventricle and 7 around the fourth ventricle. The centrum semiovalc was involved in II cases, subcortical white matter fibers in 9 Gray matter involvement was detected in the cerebral cortex in 5 the basal ganglia and thalamus (7 cases for each). The cerebellum was involved in 8 cases , pons in 7 cases, Midbrain in 5 and medulla oblongata in 2 cases. MRI detected no lesion in the optic nerve or chiasma in 7 cases with optic reuritis. |
