Abstract

Calcium antagonists are important therapeuticr agents in cardiovascular disorders (Henry, 1980 and Triggle, 1981). These drugs have been shown to block calcium current in skeletal muscle (Almers et alo,1981) and may affect excitation contraction coupling. The aim of this work is to investigate the possible role of verapamil as calcium antagonist and (norflex/and coltramyl as muscle relaxants on skeletal muscle contraction of isolated rat hemidiaphragm, which were immersed in Kreb’s Ringer bicarbonate buffered solution and stimulated directly and indirectly. In this work the effect of coltramyl and verapamil on muscle contraction are tested, separatly and in combination. It was found that each of them has an inhibitory action on skeletal muscle contraction of isolated rat hemidiaphragm, and this inhibition was not reversed by prostigmine or by excess Ca++. From the results it was tound that, coltramyl has a mild inhibitory effect byl the triple dose, also,it was found that verapamil has: an inhibitory action’on skeletal muscle contractiop.by extensive doses.
