Abstract

Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging provides unparalleled soft tissue ontrast in the female. Although ultrasound remains the most optimal odality for detecting gynecologic abnormalities, MR .imaging has proved :its value in many applications and should be the modality of choice used in most patients in whom ultrasound does not provide sufficient information. Computed tomography is not as expensive as MR imaging, but it involves ionizing radiation and is far inferior for depicting female visceral anatomy and pathology. Clinical applications ofMR imaging include detection and characterization of pelvic masses, staging of malignancy and evaluation of women with infertility and pelvic pain. The aim of this work is to study the role of MR imaging in detection and characterization of gynecologic neoplasmas, staging of gynecologic malignancy and follow up after surgery and or radiation therapy. Normal anatomy, of the female genital system, clinical presentation and different pathologic conditions of various gyneologic neoplasms as well as their MR appearances were discussed in detail. In this series, 142 female patients with clinical and sonographic findings suggestive gynecologic masses were studied. Their ages ranged from 16 to 70 years with main age of 47 years. All cases were subjected to full clinical examination, transabdominal sonography followed by pelvic MR imaging.
