Abstract The central nervous system is well protected from invasion by micro-organisms by its bony surroundings and the dura mater.Unfortunately, these barriers once penetrated, infectious agents meet little resistance and thus spread relatively unimpeded within the eNS. Brain abscess is usually a secondary phenomenon, and the site of formation and the causative organism(s) are usually related to the primary source of infection. In this study, the otogenic abscess was the most common type (6 cases, 30%), this abscess usually results from contigous spread from a middle ear infection and mastoiditis. cases formed 15% (3 cases), while cases following penetrating head trauma formed 5% (one case). So, the contigous spreading types were forming (50%) of the cases, in comparison with the haematogenous spreading types that were forming (10%) of the cases. Any infection in the body can serve as a source of organism for brain abscess. |
