Abstract

HCC is a common malignant tumor worldwide and its incidence in Egypt has been much increased in tlle last years. This is due to the high lllcidence of hepatitis and cirrhosis in Egypt. The problem in dealing with such tumor is tllat tlley frequently present late and most of tllem occur in I cirrhotic liver. BOtll factors interfer willI hepatic resection which is the only satisfactory line of treatment for these tumors. The aim of this study was to detennine tlle ploidy pattern of these tumors and to detennine its influence on tlle different clinicopatllological characters of such tumors and also its influence on tlle survival of those patients. TIle study was done from October 1993 to January, 1996 and included 50 cases of patllologically proved HCC. Full clinical assessment was done and also laboratory ll1Vestigations including alpha foetoprotein. HBsA~ aJId mui HCV. Abd Ultrasonography and CT scan were done for all casef to detennine the tumor state aIld tlle liver condition. Laparoscopi< assessment was done for some cases aiming to avoid unnecess~ exploration of the patients. I I I. FCM has been done for all cases to detennine the DI of each tumor anI according to its results tlle tumors were divided into 2 categories: Diploi, tUlnors having DI bet. 0.9-1.1 aIld Aneuploid tumors having DI > 1.] Forty four cases were of the aneuploid type (88%) while diploid tumOI represent 12% only.
