Abstract

In 1989, Hijikata reported excellent or good results in 72% of 136 atients who underwent percutaneous nucleotomy with a follow up eriod of 12 years. Kambin and Schaffer in 1989 described clinical success with anual percutaneous discecotmy in 87% of their patients, while stern in he same year (1989) reported clinical sucess in 87.5% of his patients. Although Hoppenfield in 1989 reported successful-operation in t86% he observed that severe preoperative motor deficits in eight patients fcould be improved in only one. This justifies recommending the exclusion of patients with severe neurological deficits. In the series reported by Shepperd et al. 81 % had excellent or results, and 14% were satisfied with the operation (Shepperd et aI., In 1987, Maroon and Onik, reported a series of 20 patient underwent automated percutaneous discotomy, all of whom had herniated lumbar discs confirmed by myelography and/or computerized tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
