Abstract

Nosocomial bacteremia is the occurrence of any bacteremia at least 72 hours after admission Gram positive organisms including Staph. aureus re-emerged as the leading causes of this serious problem. The process of phagocytosis is the most important defense system of the vascular tree against bacteria that cannot be cleared by serum killing. The initial stage of the phagocytosis process is the chemotaxis which is the directional movement of the phagocytic cells towards the site of infection. In our study, we assessed the neutrophil chemotaxis in patients with nosocomial bacteremia with special concern to those which have been proved to be S.aureus by bacteriological study. The neutrophil chemotaxis was studied by chemotaxis under agarose method in which zymosan was used as an activator of complement components in the normal human serum. We found that the neutrophil chemotaxis was significantly decreased in patients with S.aureus bacteremia and also in those with gram negative bacteremia than that of the control group who were proven to be healthy.
