Abstract Acrylamidc is an important industrial chemical primarily used in the production of polymers which are useful as flocculents in the treatment of waste water and purification of drinking water. It is also used for producing grouts and soil stahili/crs which are used in the construction of dam foundations and tunnels. The liver is the major site for the uptake and metabolism of xcnobiotics, converting them to pharmacologically inactive, active, or sometimes toxic metabolites. The isolated hepatocytes suspension, prepared in the high yield by the collagenase-perfusion method of Berry and Friend(1969) and its modifications added to this range of experimental tools. These cells show many of the properties of hepatocytes in situ but are more readily amenable to experimental manipulation than the intact liver. The principle toxic effect of acrylamide, both in animals and humans, is neurotoxicity. Peripheral nervous system effects are most prominent, but central nervous system effects have also been reported, acrylamide is metabolised to the epoxide metabolite, glycidamide. This metabolite was proved to be involved in the reproductive toxicity and genotoxicity.
