Abstract Anorectal motility disorders is one of the most important subjects in the whole field of gastrointestinal motility because they may by so trouble some as to disrupt the life style . . The performance of anorectal functions depends upon the complex interrelationship of sensory and motor function which are coordinated at various levels within the central nervous system . This includes unstriated, striated muscles as well as enteric , autonomic and somatic nerves . The anatomy of the anorectum has been revised by Shafik 1975 and still a matter of controversy uptill now and of functional importane are the rectum, levator ani , puborectlis muscle, external anal sphincter, internal anal sphincter, and the mucosa of the anal canal and their innervation . The diagnosis of functional disorders of the anorectum , incontinence and constipation, requires the combination of a careful history , a thorough physical examination and the use of special physiological and imaging techniques . Benign anorectal diseases with new concepts about their etiology and associated motility disorders are the basic element in this study . Fecal incontinence is a distressing problem which can be attributed to a mechanical defect in the muscle , inadequate innervation . |
