Abstract At first, the gross anatomy of the parotid gland, the radiological and imaging anatomy of the parotid gland, inluding: Plain X-ray, conventional sialography, US, CT and MRI were described. The different imaging techniques used in diagnosis of parotid masses were explained in details. The pathology of different parotid masses including inflammatory and neoplastic processes were reviewed. Lastly, the different imaging features of parotid masses were described. From the obtained review of different parotid masses, we can conclude the following: Plain X-ray radiographs are valuable in detection of radioopaque calculi, calcifications and soft tissue mass shadow. Conventional sialogram is usefull in diagnosis of the different diseases of the parotid duct system, whether the main duct or intraglandular branches. However, it is invasive, painfull technique and also it needs highly cooperative patient. US which is a cheap non invasive technique, is a sensitive imaging modality in detection and characterization of a parotid mass, both the grey scale and color Doppler appearances of acute parotid diseases are valuable as a primary imaging investigative modality. |
