Abstract

Mandibular resection or composite excision of oral and facial tissue together with bone of the jaws result in a complex situation of, disturbed function and aesthetics. The development of microsurgical techniques made it possible to repair these complicated defects in one session. Mandibular reconstruction with free flaps has become a well established technique as it showed superior results to those obtained with previous methods of reconstruction. The choice of donor sites for mandibular reconstruction has frequently been determined by the familiarity of the surgeon with particular technique. However, each patient presents a unique problem, and donor site selection should be determined instead by the specific bone and soft tissue requirements of the defects. A clinical study was conducted where the application and efficiency of free composite flaps. Radial forearm, iliac crest, and fibula free flaps to reconstruct mandibular defects either immediately or delayed after ablative surgery for a wide variety of pathological lesions in 48 patients were studied, morbidity of donor sites.
