Abstract Petrous apex is the most inaccessible portion of the temporal bone. It can be involved in congenital, inflammatory or neoplastic diseases. Various routes for exposure of the petrous apex are available. These includes; the middle cranial fossa, trans¬sphenoid and transtemporal approaches. Although multiple transtemporal routes are available to approach the disease process of the petrous apex, there is relatively little detailed informations available in comparing the exposure obtained by each route. The present study was conducted to compare the exposure obtained by the trans¬temporal approaches. The studied approaches were, the subcochlear, infralabyrinthine, subarcuate, supralabyrinthine and the pre-cochlear. Dissection of the petrous apex was performed on 10 formalin preserved temporal bone specimens and 40 cases with petrous apex pathology. The studied cases were: - 36 cases of petrositis - 3 cases of glomus tympanicum tumours - 1 case of plasmacytoma. |
