Abstract

Non traumatic conditions affecting the knee joint are common. They can affect different age groups. One hundred and thirty two patients clinically suspected to have knee lesions were included in this study. They were 87 males and 45 females with their age ranged from 8 to 70 years. Some patients had more than one pathology. The total number of lesions was 213. All patients were studied by plain x-ray and MR imaging. MRI findings of our patients was compared with histopathologic , atthroscopic and/or clinical findings to determine the value of MRI. The lesions were divided into seven main groups according to their final diagnosis; Group 1: Meniscallesions. Meniscal degeneration and tear were the commonest meniscal pathology in our study. Descoid meniscus was the second form of meniscal lesion that was detected. MR Imaging proved to be highly sensitive noninvasive method in delection of different meniscal lesions. It helps in grading system of meniscal injury. It is also an excellent tool for noninvasive visualization and characterization of discoed meniscus. Group II: Cartilage abnormalities: Osteoarthritis (O.A); the knee is one of the most common site of osteoarthritis. It was the only cartilage abnormality that was detected in this work. Although the primary diagnosis of OA is almost always established with conventional radiography, MR imaging shows the whole spectrum of osteoarthritic changes more accurately and at an earlier time. Nevertheless, . its main indications are to visualize cartilage structures and the extent of involvement of different compartments, that shown’ more accurately than with any other
