Abstract

The present study was implemented in order tostudy the effect of short term and long term administration of chilli powder on the stomach and duodenum of albino rats. furthermore, we had investigated the influence of administration of chilli on the pathology of ethanol-induced gastric mucosal ulcers in albino rats. In this study sixty two adult male albino rats were used. This work was studied in two parts. In the first part of this work, we used 26 male albino rats classified into three groups (1, 2, 3) . . The first group consisted of six rats which were given the usual food free from chilli and used as a control group. The second group consisted of 10 rats which were given chilli in an amount of 100 mg/kg body weight/day by feeding tube for one week. The third group included the remaining ten rats which were given chilli in an amount of 100 mg/kgm body weight/day for 4 weeks. Specimens were taken from the fundus & pylorus of the stomach and duodenum of each albino rat. Each specimen was divided into three peices. One peice was used to prepare frozen sections and stained for succinic dehydrogenase activity. The second peice was fixed in neutral buffered formalin and the third peice was fixed in Bouin’ s solution, sections were prepared and stained by Hx and E stain, PAS and Hx stain & Grimelius silver stain.
