Abstract Regional analgesia in obstetrics is an art based on science. In recent years, regional anesthesia has become increasingly preferred for cesarean section as it has major advantages over general anesthesia. The most important advantages are that the anesthetist can avoid the risk of aspiration of gastric contents, and difficult intubation which are the most common causes of maternal mortality due to anesthesia, also there are fewer chest complications and better neonatal outcome. Spinal and epidural block have been both used efficiently in anesthesia for caedarean section, Both techniques have their advantages and drawbacks. Combined spinal-epidural technique IS increasingly popular because it provides the speed and reliability of spinal anesthesia with the advantages of continuous epiduralcatheter technique and greater flexibility in providing high quality analgesia both during and after surgery. The combined spinal-epidural technique was introduced by Browniridge in 1981 to exploit the advantages of epidural and spinal block for caesarean section . |
