Abstract
The aim of the present work was to evaluate the serotonergic agent, fluoxetine, one inhibitor of serotonin-reuptake, regarding its effectiveness, safety and possible health benefits as an adjunct therapy to the hypocaloric diet in obese subjects in three months trial and to study the value of its augmentation with buspirone . This work also aimed to study the effects of energy restriction both alone and in combination with the serotonergic .drugs on some anthropometric, clinical, psychological, biochemical and hocardiographic parameters. In addition, our aim was to show the relation between plasma leptin and body mass index before and after treatment and to explore the effect of fluoxetine on plasma leptin, The study comprised 80 obese subjects who wish to participate in a weight loss program, selected from outpatient clinics of Mansoura university Hospital. 56 females and 24 males with their ages ranging from 19 to 38 years. Obese subjects were selected to be healthy without significant history or clinical evidence of secondary causes of obesity. Drug intake was not taken for at least two weeks before the study. They received a comprehensive chart and clear instruction for balanced LCD (about 1200 Kcal/day) They were divided into four groups. Group (I) received fluoxetine 60mg/day+diet group (II) received fluoxetine 60mg/day.
