Abstract The recent attention that focused on enterococci is likely to continue in the foreseeable future. The ability of enterococci to colonize the gastrointestinal tract, plus the many intrinsic and acquired resistance traits means that these organisms are given an excellent opportunity to become secondary invaders. During the study period from January, 1999 to July, 2000, and out of2743 samples that yielded positive culture results, 211 enterococci were isolated representing 7.70/0 of all nosocomial infections with a prevalence rate of 0.680/0. Urinary tract infections, wound infections and blood stream infections were the most common sites from which enterococci were isolated. The overall incidence of vancomycin resistance among enterococci was 130/0 VRE was isolated from 1 % of nosocomial infections with a prevalence rate of 0.09%. It was mostly isolated from urine, wound and blood. Enterococci including VRE were isolated both in pure (770/0) and in mixed culture (230/0) mostly among Gram-negative bacilli. |
