Abstract

The aim of this work is to evaluate I-PSS and to correlate scoring with the objective means utilized for determination of bladder outlet obstruction Since May 1996, 460 male patients were prospectively included in this study. Their age ranged between 41 and 88 years (mean 60.4:f: 9.4 years). Their symptoms were evaluated using I-PSS. In addition, they were subjected to ORE, outpatient cystoscopy, estimation of PSA, and TRUS. Urodynamic evaluation included uroflowmetry, filling cystometry and pressure-flow studies. Correlation was tested between scores and measurable objective’ parameters. No correlation was found between the individual symptom scores and objective parameters {average flow rate, maximum flow rate, I ; post-void residual urine, prostate size and Schafer’s grade}. IU. No correlation was found between the total score, the score of obstructive symptoms or the score of irritative symptoms and the same objective parameters as well. Non-invasive parameters had at best fair correlation to pressure-flow study. .. Prostatic symptom scores are qualitative. Their use to quantify the degree of obstruction or to evaluate therapy is questionable.
