Abstract

Gastric varices is a major health problem which i~ not uncommon, it constitutes about 7.7% of the total number of patients admitted to a specialized unit of upper gastrointestinal tract bleeding. It is the cause of bleeding among 15.2% of patients presented with variceal bleeding. Although, there are multiple current therapeutic modalities for the management of ruptured gastric varices, the optimal mahagement in patients with cirrhosis has not been codified yet. The aim of this work was to diagnose and classify the different types of gastric varices and to evaluate and compare between the different endoscopic and surgical modalities in the management of gastric variceal bleeding. This work was conducted on 185 patients presented clinically with haematemesis and/or melena proved endoscopically to be of gastric variceal source at Mansoura Emergency Hospital, and they were subjected to: 1- Thorough history taking and full clinical examination. 2- Routine laboratory investigations including: _ Complete blood picture. _ Liver function tests.
