Abstract Bleeding from oesophageal varices is one ofthe major health problems in the world specially in Egypt where schistosomiasis and hepatitis are prevalent. It results in morbidity and mortality despite the different therapeatic options. The technique of EVL was developed recently to achieve an efficacy similar to or better than other measures as EIS with fewer complications. The aim of the present work was to assess the efficacy and safety ofEVL as a prophylaxis against risky oesophageal and/or gastric varices and the value of addition of 1 Omg zestril as a daily oral dose in rapid obliteration of risky varices and prevention of recurrence after obliteration.
